How to Get a Medical Cannabis Prescription in Poland — 5 Steps, Cost, Online or In-Person

A medical cannabis prescription in Poland requires one doctor's visit. No referral, no public insurance, no weeks of waiting. We issue the ePrescription during the consultation — the code enters the P1 system within minutes. The rest is the pharmacy.

Below: the process step by step — visit cost, documents to bring, when online works, and what to do if the doctor doesn't qualify you.

Step 1 — book the qualifying visit

The first visit at CannabisMedic is 169 PLN (~€40). No referral needed from a GP or the public health fund. Just:

  • Fill the form on the website (5 minutes)
  • Call: +48 731 000 645
  • Pick in-person (Krakow/Bydgoszcz) or online
  • Next available slots usually within 24-48 hours. The visit lasts 20-30 minutes. Payment by card or transfer, personal invoice on request.

Online consultation works the same as in-person — over video. The ePrescription enters the P1 system within minutes after the visit ends.

Step 2 — what to bring

Medical documentation helps the doctor assess eligibility quickly:

  • Hospital discharge summaries, treatment records, test results — especially if you have a long history of pain or another condition
  • List of current medications — to avoid interactions
  • Symptom description — when they appear, what worsens or eases them, how they affect daily life
  • Previous treatments — what you've tried, whether it worked, what the side effects were
  • No complete documentation? Don't cancel. The doctor can assess eligibility from the interview alone. Many of our patients come without documents and qualify — especially for insomnia, anxiety, muscle pain, where treatment history is scattered across different doctors.

Practical tip: write down every painkiller you've taken in the last 12 months, even if you no longer take them. This often decides qualification.

Step 3 — what happens during the consultation

The doctor runs a detailed interview. Questions cover:

  • Symptom nature, location, severity — when, what triggers them, how long they last
  • Previous treatment — what you tried, what worked, why it stopped
  • Co-existing conditions — cardiovascular, psychiatric, substance use history
  • Lifestyle — do you drive, what work, planning pregnancy
  • Based on that the doctor decides whether cannabis therapy is appropriate. If yes — picks a specific preparation: manufacturer (Aurora, Bedrocan, Tilray), THC and CBD concentration, form (flower, oil, capsules), starting dose.

If you don't qualify — the doctor says why. Sometimes suggests a CBD-only preparation (milder, no psychoactivity) or refers to a different treatment.

    Step 4 — the ePrescription

ePrescription has been standard since 2023. After qualification the doctor issues an electronic prescription that goes straight into the P1 system. You receive:

  • SMS with a 4-digit code — enough at the pharmacy
  • Email with QR code — alternative if you prefer
  • Access in the IKP app (Internet Patient Account) — full prescription overview
  • The prescription is valid 30 days from issuance. You fill it at any Polish pharmacy that dispenses controlled substances group I-N. Just provide your PESEL number + code (or scan the QR).

Step 5 — filling at the pharmacy

With the ePrescription you go to the pharmacy. Not every pharmacy keeps cannabis preparations in stock — during the visit the doctor will tell you which pharmacies in your region to check. You can also use KtoMaLek.pl or call directly.

If the pharmacy doesn't have it — ask them to order. Most receive it from the wholesaler within 24 hours. The prescription is valid 30 days, you have time.

After pickup the pharmacist will instruct you on use and storage. Keep the receipt — in case of a check, that's your proof of legal possession.

Step 6 — follow-up visit and ongoing therapy

After 4-12 weeks we schedule a follow-up visit (149 PLN). The doctor evaluates:

  • Preparation effectiveness — did symptoms decrease, how much, how fast
  • Side effects — dry mouth, drowsiness, dizziness — most resolve within 1-2 weeks
  • Whether to change dose, manufacturer, form — e.g. switching from vaporization to oil
  • Issuing the next prescription — if therapy is working
  • Regular follow-ups are the key to safe and effective therapy. Don't 'disappear' after the first prescription — the doctor fine-tunes the preparation and you save money on ineffective doses.
